And so her story begins...

Growing up, all Aya knew were the walls of the dome that protected her people under the Ruby Sea. A child born of a love affair between a land dweller and a sea dweller, the little Raen was the pride and joy of her family. Trained in the arts of hospitality, she was well versed in dance, poetry, and music. A perfect handmaiden for the Ruby Princess in the making. No one knew of the origins of this delicate girl, as her mother made certain of that. For if anyone in the Ruby Princess’s domain knew one of their own had snuck off to see the surface, the delightfully normal life she knew would end.As she matured into a young teen, she knew the ins and outs of the palace. She and her mother knew a decent life of small luxuries, being in high favor with the royal court. Even though she was only merely a handmaiden, her mother was well-loved by everyone, and in-kind, her daughter as well. Aya knew no hunger, but she also didn’t know excess.Eventually, she learned of her mother’s secret affair and wanted to know about the man her mother fell in love with and hid in secret. She knew he was some kind of gangster, making his living smuggling exotic items across the sea from far lands to Kugane. Her mother explained that they had met by chance, with him discovering her basking in the sunlight in a closed-off lagoon. Things led to them sneaking off together, sharing stories, and eventually love blossomed. Her mother had also explained that even though her father knew she existed, he left to protect them from the life he led. This caused a strained rift between Aya and her mother. This led to Aya sneaking away at night to see this world her mother talked about fondly; hoping to meet her father.It was wishful thinking when one fateful night, she was captured by a crew from a Garlean doctor’s ship while sneaking off to the surface with a group of friends. She then learned that they were seeing if the rumors of Raen living under the sea were different from the ones found onshore were true. In her case, they seemed to had found a rare specimen. Calling himself a doctor and scientist, the man proceeded to experiment on the young girl, and in one instance, he had forcefully removed a few scales off of her left hip, permanently scarring the girl in the process.Losing some of her scales had in fact caused physical and emotional trauma. Somehow another ship had caught wind of a man going around fishing out sea dwelling raen to examine and dissect. It just so happened that the ship was one commanded by her father. Realizing that one of the captured Raen on the ship was his daughter, he saved her from the clutches of the scientist, destroying his research and sinking his ship. Unconscious from days of pain and experiments, the girl faded in and out of consciousness, she awoke in her bed, her mother at her side, concerned.Now a young adult, she was determined to search for her father, whom she had found from her mother was her savior. She eventually convinced her mother to allow her to travel away from Sui no Sato, once everyone was given permission to come and go from the dome freely. She soon found herself in the underbelly of Kugane, where gangsters and shady characters made their livings.And this was how our little petal soon found herself within the halls of the Nisshoku-Gumi. Unsure how she fits into this world of darkness and crime, she hopes at least it leads to finding her father and answers.
